Deaths from drug-resistant bacteria top those from AIDS - 2007-10-18 00:36:13
Nearly 19,000 Americans died in 2005 of invasive infections caused by drug-resistant staphylococcus bacteria -- more than were killed by AIDS, according to a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
But what's the overlap?
After all AIDS doesn't kill you as such, it destroys your immune system enough that something else does. I'd be willing to take a punt that an infection of some sort, and a bacterial infection specifically would account for a large chunk of "deaths from AIDS". Hence I would expect some overlap in those figures - counting AIDS deaths in both values and hence overstating the comparison...
