Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - 2004-05-29 02:58:18

I dislike Jim Carrey films. Which doesn't bode well for this one, since it stars that master of the funny face and crappy film.

Much to my surprise, he was good. Only one funny face, and only one scene in which he did Jim Carrey trademarked body crap. For the rest of the film he did some good acting.

The story involves Joel Barish (Carrey) getting his memories of his girlfriend erased. Most of the film is spent inside his mind during that process where dream stuff happens all the time (this is done on par with the Nightmares Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode in terms of that dream experience where things jusy don't make sense).

Along with the very cool dream-like memories, there's a bit of comedy and a lot of concept raising. A film that makes you think - and starring Jim Carrey, who would have thought such a thing was possible.

The opening credits are also really late. At least 15 minutes, maybe even 20, goes by before they turn up. Wierd.

A very good film and well worth seeing. Particularly if you like non-linear story lines, where time order is ignored. It's great fun to piece together what exactly was what at the end, though the hints are too obvious during the film.

It's a Jim Carrey film without Jim Carrey antics. And a Kate Winslet film without naked boobies. Surprises for the whole family.
