Toxic Vegemite! - 2006-10-22 19:21:55

The United States has slapped a ban on Vegemite, outraging Australian expatriates there.

The bizarre crackdown was prompted because Vegemite contains folate, which in the US can be added only to breads and cereals.

US bans Vegemite

Surely the constitution over here bans such bizarre and unreasonable things?

I see a loop hole though - if I had the spare time I could retire on the profits I'm sure sure. Put the vegemite on the bread before importing it - then it's an addition to the bread, and apparently bread can have folic acid added (it's only toxic enough to confiscate at entry ports when it's not added to breads or cereals it would seem).

Need to work out how to stop the bread going moldy - of course vegemite lasts forever, maybe a thick enough coating all over each piece of bread would preserve the bread for decades too?

Freeze dried vegemite sandwiches, I can hear the ka-chinging already.

Of course you could also just put the vegemite in containers labelled "Auto Grease" for import into the US - nobody's going to notice the difference.
