When things are different - 2005-04-09 15:16:32

Before I left Australia there were a few places offering DVD rentals by mail. Things like this, where you pay a monthly fee and select a bunch of DVDs they mail you a small number of them and when you mail one back they send another from the list you made.

For people who watch a lot of movies it can be a reasonable deal, however there's a minor flaw.

I'm pretty sure the idea comes from the US, and there is a minor difference in the way things are done over here that has a major impact on this way of renting DVDs.

Over here you send mail by putting in your letterbox. Which in this case means you can return a movie and hence get another one sent to you by simply putting it in your own mailbox, you probably don't have to leave your yard. In Australia you need to go to a nearby postbox if you are lucky enough to have one, or to the post office - which of course defeats the entire idea, you might as well go to the video store.

Welcome to America - 2005-04-14 02:50:20

It's 2:30am. I'm working. I'm salaried and not paid by the hour.

I got my work IM and work email up and running today, and it appears to have been more of a curse than a blessing :). I also have a 9am phone meeting tomorrow to look forward too. And the toast burnt this morning so I was awoken by the fire alarm at 8am or something.

Woe is me.

Actually I'm enjoying having something new to do. And I like the deep end.

I started using Outlook a couple of days ago... Because I needed to send a meeting request to someone and I knew Outlook could do that. So Office got installed on my laptop.

And I can se why people use it. It's actually a nice piece of software for managing task lists, meetings, calendars, etc. It sucks for email though. So now I have Outlook running for its calendar and task lists, and another piece of software for reading email. A shared calendar/meeting setup would be better, but that's something I'll investigate after I get these "cron" jobs to provide useful allerts...

I really miss using nmh for mail. I need to work out a way to get it up and running for my work email.
